The focus of most of Patrick's work is on interaction with computers in everyday life and inevitably this spans a number of traditional fields in computer science. With the development of sensing and pervasive computing technologies, Patrick is particularly interested in how create new forms of digital technologies that are meaningful to users in the broadest possible sense. Of most relevance to the cluster is the digital jewellery research that he and Jayne Wallace do at Newcastle University's Culture Lab which seeks to question many of the assumptions as to the nature of digital technologies. This notion of creating "meaningful technology" underpins the "Cultural Technologies" research theme that Patrick coordinates within Newcastle University.
