Phil Willis's research interests are within colour raster graphics, computer games, virtual reality and animation and film technologies. He has an underlying interest in picture and object representations, especially the balance between discrete and continuous representations. He was Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the largest Department of the University, from 1997-2000, when he proposed spinning of a new Department of Computer Science which he now leads. Externally he is a Fellow and past Chair of the Eurographics Association and became the first Eurographics-ACM SIGGRAPH joint member. He is a founding member of UKCRC, the UK Computing Research Committee.
